The oil seal is a mechanical component used to seal oil (oil is the most common liquid substance in the transmission system, and also generally refers to liquid substances in general). It isolates the parts that need lubrication in the transmission parts from the output parts to prevent lubricating oil from leaking. However, during use, we often encounter the problem of oil seal leakage, which is really a headache. Below, I will analyze what causes oil seal leakage and share some solutions.
Loose oil seal is the main factor causing oil leakage. When the shaft wears and forms grooves, and it still cannot seal even if a new oil seal is replaced, it is because the contact pressure between the oil seal lip and the shaft decreases, causing the interference between the oil seal lip diameter and the shaft diameter after installation to be too small.
Main reasons:
1, oil seal manufacturing quality is poor;
2, poor shaft or bearing quality;
3, improper use and maintenance;
4, improper installation;
5, improper storage, and adverse effects caused by environmental pollution.
Countermeasures for oil leakage due to loose oil seal:
1, master the basic knowledge of identifying counterfeit and inferior products, and choose high-quality, standard oil seals.
2. During installation, if the shaft journal surface finish is poor or there are rust spots, corrosion, burrs, or other defects, smooth the surface with fine emery cloth or an oilstone. Apply clean engine oil or lubricating grease to the oil-seal lip or the corresponding position on the shaft journal. Apply sealant to the oil seal's outer circumference and wrap stiff paper around the shaft keyway to avoid scratching the seal lip. Use a special tool to rotate and press the seal inward. Never hammer or force it in, as this can deform the seal or break its spring and cause failure. If the lip turns over, the spring comes off, or the seal is misaligned, remove it and reinstall it.
It should be noted that when the shaft diameter is not worn and the oil seal spring has sufficient elasticity, do not tighten the inner spring without authorization.
3. Oil seals used in machinery generally have harsh working conditions, large environmental temperature differences, a lot of dust, and frequent machine vibrations that cause the stress conditions of the machine parts to constantly change. Frequent inspection, maintenance, and maintenance are required.
4, if the shaft diameter and bearings are seriously worn; the oil seal rubber is aging or the spring fails, etc., the corresponding parts should be repaired and replaced in time.
5. Abnormal heating components or assemblies should be promptly troubleshooted; avoid mechanical overspeeding and overload operation to prevent oil seal lip temperature from rising, rubber aging, and early lip wear.
6. Check the engine oil level frequently. If there are too many impurities in the engine oil, alloy powder and metal iron filings, the engine oil must be completely replaced. The brand and quality of the engine oil you replace must meet the requirements of the season.
